Ereveld Menteng Pulo Walking Tour
About This Tour
Trying to find a peaceful space in Jakarta that reminds you of the future? This walk is perfect. Ereveld Menteng Pulo is a poignant and solemn site that stands as a symbol of remembrance and honour for those who sacrificed their lives. This serene 25-hectare Dutch colonial cemetery is the final resting place for over 4,000 soldiers and civilians, Dutch and Allied, who lost their lives during World War II and the Indonesian struggle for independence. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this cemetery serves as a reminder of the human cost of war. You will not feel tired walking through this cemetery, as it will pamper your eyes with green pastures and clean, white gravestones in various shapes. Amidst the urban sprawl of Jakarta, we will learn about the establishment of this cemetery, the monuments that represent the people buried in the block, the workshop that crafts the gravestone for each grave, and the Simultan Church, which contains symbols that help us picture the history. You want to take as many pictures as possible on this walk, as you will not only find beautiful grasslands amidst Jakarta’s tall buildings, but there is also a church with interesting architecture and a small oasis near it.
